Russia
Russia is the largest country on earth, spanning 9 time zones and stretching more than 8,000kms from west to east. It has a population approaching 150 million, the world's largest reserves of mineral and energy resources and roughly 25% of the world's liquid fresh water (with Lake Baikal, alone, accounting for 20%).
Centuries of oppression by the ruling class gave way, in 1927, to a soviet (socialist) state, from which emerged modern-day Russia.
Fortunately for us, the remnants of the former royalist nation have largely remained and there are extraordinary treasures to be viewed in Moscow and St Petersburg.
