Cambodia

Between the 9th and 14th Centuries, successive Khmer kingdoms built glorious temple complexes, the most remarkable being located nearby Siem Reap. With the kingdom's inevitable collapse, the remarkable temples of Angkor were largely forgotten, until visited (in 1860) and popularised by Henry Mahout, a French naturalist and explorer.

Angkor Wat will be the focal point of any visit to Cambodia, however the fascination shouldn't end there as there are many places to explore and many discoveries to be made. The vast Tonle Sap Lake, the mighty Mekong River, Phnom Penh and Sihanoukville all offer wonderful sights and amazing experiences.

Cambodia's a country which is worthy of inspection; and visitors will consider its former grandeur, as much as its recent dark period.

Come with your eyes wide open and you'll find a way to help the Cambodian people as they work towards happier and more productive lives.

Cambodia is hot and humid for much of the year and exploration of the temple complexes can be very thirsty work. To ensure you can make the most of your visit, make sure you take along your most comfortable shoes, wear a hat, apply sunscreen and carry plenty of bottled water.

Set out in the morning and try to complete your arrangements in the early afternoon, then relax by your hotel's pool and recover.

Visitors to Cambodia like to take an interest in orphanages and schools, however the more professional establishments are careful to limit visits as it's otherwise too disruptive for the children. If you would like to assist the children of Cambodia, there many excellent orphanages and schools run by wonderful NGOs.
